Hair loss is a problem experienced by many people. However, many people were hesitant to get a hair transplant because it required shaving their head completely. Due to concerns about social status and aesthetics, they avoided this procedure. However, shaveless hair transplantation has largely provided a solution to these concerns. In this article, we will provide detailed information on how a transplant can be performed without shaving.
First of all, it should be noted that this method is not actually very new. Dr. Hakan Doğanay has performed many of his operations using the shaveless method since he began practicing the DHI technique in 2010. You can see this by checking the publication date of the YouTube video whose link we have provided. However, in those years, many clinics in Turkey had not even heard of this technique. If you type “traşsız saç ekimi before:2011” in quotes into the YouTube search bar, you will better understand what we mean. Even today, one in every five people at our clinic undergoes a transplant using the shaveless method.
What is Unshaven Hair Transplant

Classic FUE hair transplantation is performed by shaving the entire donor area and the area to be transplanted. However, with the shaveless (No-Shave) method, it is possible to perform this procedure without cutting all or part of the hair in the donor or recipient area. It is with the increase of this application that the idea of hair transplantation has become very attractive to people with aesthetic concerns. Now, let’s see how this method, which is gaining popularity, is performed.
Who is a Candidate for Hair Transplantation Without Shaving?
Many people who apply to us for hair transplantation request this technique. But unfortunately, this popular method is not suitable for everyone. Now, let’s explain in items who can have a shaveless hair transplant.
- Women: We can say that shaveless hair transplantation is a perfect solution for women. With the development of this technique, women’s interest in hair transplantation has increased significantly.
- Norwood 2-3 type men: Transplantation without shaving is possible for individuals who require a relatively low number of grafts, such as 2000. It is not suitable to perform this procedure in a single session for those who require a higher number. However, repeat transplantations with low graft numbers can be performed at 1-year intervals. This way, the targeted number of grafts can be reached.
- Eyebrow transplantation: Since a low number of grafts will be required, the shaveless method is a very good option for those considering eyebrow transplantation.
- Men who keep the hair on their nape long: Shaveless hair transplantation can easily be performed on men whose donor area hair length is 10 cm or longer.
- Hair density restoration: Whether for women or men, excellent results can be obtained using a combination of the shaveless and DHI methods to fill in sparse areas. We do not recommend traditional FUE hair transplantation for density restoration procedures.
- Regional transplantations requiring a small number of grafts: In cases of hair loss due to trauma such as traffic accidents or burns, the area to be transplanted is usually small. Therefore, since the number of grafts required will also be low, it is possible to have the transplantation without completely shaving the hair.
- Crown (vertex) area transplantations: If a hair transplant is to be performed only on the crown area, there is no need to shave the hair in the front region.
- Transplantations performed with the DHI method: Shaveless hair transplantation is almost synonymous with the use of hair implant pens, called implanter pens.

The individuals in the group we mentioned above are those who meet our suitability criteria. So, why do people prefer unshaven hair transplantation? The reasons for this preference are:
- Those who do not want the hair transplant to be noticeable and wish to keep it concealed;
- Businesspeople who want to return to their work and social life in a very short time.
- Men who perhaps have never cut their hair short since childhood and thus do not want to have their heads shaved.
- Women: They are a significant group who wish to benefit from the advantages of the unshaven method.
How is unshaven hair transplantation done?
Although a completely shave-less transplant is theoretically possible, it is rarely practical. It is possible to perform a transplant without shaving the hair in 3 different ways. Now, let’s briefly look at these 3 shave-less transplantation methods.
1) Donor area is partially shaved / Recipient area is not shaved: This is the most commonly applied method in practice. The hair in the donor area must be at least 7-8 cm long. Essentially, the same shaving technique used in the FUT method is applied here. Depending on the planned number of grafts, a small window-like area in the donor region is opened up and shaved. After local anesthesia, hair follicles are extracted one by one from this area using the FUE method. If the donor area’s density and length are good, a second horizontal window can be opened to obtain more grafts. Here, the direction of the long hair is horizontal and downward.
Therefore, the goal is for these long hairs to cover and conceal the shaved area. As a result, even on the first day after the transplant, it is not noticeable that grafts have been taken from the donor area. This method is quite ideal for female hair transplantation, patch/scar transplants, and for men with long hair.

2) Donor Area Completely Shaved / Recipient Area Not Shaved: For individuals requiring more than 2000 grafts, the donor area can be shaved completely. However, the transplantation can be performed without cutting the hair in the recipient area. This can be particularly easily used when performing hair densification with the DHI method. In this way, if the donor area is strong, up to 5000 grafts can be harvested.
3)3) Completely Shave-Free Transplantation: Neither the donor nor the recipient area is shaved in any way. Special FUE graft extraction punches have been produced for these. It is a technique that is quite difficult to apply in practice. This method is called Long Hair FUE. It is not very possible to harvest more than 500 grafts in a single session. We do not practice this. Even if the hairs are harvested long from the donor area, they will eventually shed due to shock loss. Therefore, this method is not very practical or meaningful.
Advantages of Shave-Free Hair Transplantation
The shave-free method has become the preference for many people because it allows for transplantation without cutting the hair. Now, let’s talk about these advantages.

- The recovery time is faster and shorter. Because neither the donor nor the recipient area is shaved, the scabs and tiny incision marks are hidden by the long hair and are almost invisible. Thus, the person maintains their current hairstyle. Therefore, even on the 1st day, it may not be noticeable that a transplant was performed.
- You can return to your work and normal life very shortly after the operation.
- Long hair is more advantageous for densifying thinning hair because the sparse, empty areas are more easily visible in this case. In non-shave hair transplants, very successful results can be achieved, especially when combined with the DHI method.
- In particular, for women, the waiting time for the hair to grow back to its original length is eliminated.
What are the Disadvantages of Non-Shave Hair Transplantation?

Of course, while this method has advantages, it also has disadvantages. These are:
- It is not always possible to obtain a high number of grafts. If more grafts are needed, second or third sessions may be required.
- The washing process after the hair transplant is more difficult. Specifically, a cream is applied to the hair in the recipient area before washing. This cream will stick to the hair strands, so the washing process must be done carefully.
- Since the implantation will be done by working between existing hair strands, the procedure can take a bit longer. For example, a procedure that would take 3 hours might extend to 4 hours.
- This method is not suitable for individuals with advanced hair loss, such as Norwood 5, 6, or 7.
Shaveless Hair Transplant Prices
In some clinics, shaveless (unshaven) hair transplant prices may be relatively higher compared to the traditional shaven transplant. This is because this method is a technical application that requires high skill. Implanting between existing hair strands without damaging the follicles requires significant experience. Furthermore, performing the transplant using the shaveless DHI method can also increase the prices. For 2025, the average shaveless transplant prices can range between 80,000 – 150,000 TL.
At AHD Clinic, because we have been routinely performing the shaveless method for years, there is no additional cost difference. That is, our pricing policy for this method is the same as for the classic hair transplant.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is It Possible to Have a Hair Transplant for Thinning Hair?
Of course. With the DHI technique, it is possible to easily perform a density procedure by implanting between thinning hair. In fact, it is possible to perform this procedure without shaving or cutting the hair. At AHD clinic, for many years, shatterless hair transplantation has been performed using the Choi pen technique by implanting between existing hair. Thus, the thinning area can be densified without shaving.
Are the Grafts Damaged in a Shaverless Transplant?
It would not be correct to say that the grafts are absolutely not damaged. Therefore, the doctor and team performing the transplant without shaving must be experienced. Furthermore, the Choi pen technique offers a lower possibility of causing minimal damage to the existing, non-shedded grafts. For this reason, the shatterless DHI hair transplant is the most ideal method.
How Many Grafts Can Be Transplanted in a Shaverless Hair Transplant?
For suitable candidates, 1500-2000 grafts is an ideal number for one session with this method. Particularly for women, it is possible to achieve a successful result with this number.
